About Us

The Public Works Department is comprised of five divisions: Stormwater, Technical, Highways & Traffic, Fleet Services, and Facility Services.   The Stormwater, Technical, and Highways & Traffic divisions are responsible for services related to county-maintained roadways, subdivision streets and water quality code compliance.   Fleet Services and Facility Services focus on supporting internal operations for Jefferson County Government.

Stormwater Division: Jefferson County has established water quality regulations that the division uses to provide guidance and resources to our local area communities. Our efforts help to prevent land erosion by reducing the amount of sediment and other pollutants in stormwater runoff. The division utilizes Chapter 505 of the Code of Ordinances for Jefferson County to regulate land disturbance, erosion sedimentation controls, and other water quality issues.

Highways & Traffic Division: Employees of the division perform various roadway, bridge and street maintenance or construction activities. These include pavement repairs, culvert and driveway pipe replacements, traffic signals operations, traffic signs and pavement markings, mowing county right-of-way, debris/trash and dead animal removals, snow/ice removal, as well as other road maintenance services.  The division maintains 670 miles of county roadways, 181 bridges longer than twenty feet, 98 miles of subdivision streets, approximately 400 major culverts greater than five feet in width, 34 traffic signals and beacons, approximately 10,000 traffic signs, as well as many other roadway assets.

Technical Division: These engineers, planners, project managers, right-of-way specialists, and construction inspectors administer our federal, state and locally funded roadway infrastructure improvement projects.   They manage all aspects of project development from cradle to grave, which include scoping out potential improvement projects, grant writing and submission, consultant design services oversight and guidance, construction engineering and implementation, and final project close out.  The division manages approximately 50 total projects in the current five-year capital improvement plan yielding an estimated total investment of $90 million dollars into improving our roadway, bridge, traffic and street infrastructure.

Facility Services Division: This division provides custodial and building maintenance services, as well as building use or function remodels and renovations at all twenty-four county-owned buildings.  Our staff is here to serve all the building maintenance needs of county employees as well as public visitors.

Fleet Services Division: This division provides fleet maintenance services to all county-owned vehicles and equipment.  The employees maintain approximately 375 light fleet vehicles, 80 heavy fleet vehicles, and over 200 pieces of specialty equipment. Our staff is here to serve the fleet maintenance needs of county employees.
