Absentee Voting

Jefferson County residents who will not be able to go to their polling place on Election Day may vote absentee beginning six weeks prior to an election.

Vote in Person: County Clerk's Office - 729 Maple Street, Hillsboro (8am to 5pm)

If you plan to vote absentee in person, you do not need to complete an application. Simply visit the County Clerk's Office and sign the Poll Pad to confirm your eligibility.

Must Bring Photo ID: Missouri Driver's License, Passport or Military ID

Voting Absentee by Mail

ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATION

To vote absentee by mail, an application is required. Applications for mail absentee voting must be submitted to the County Clerk’s Office by the deadline. Relatives within the first degree (parents and children) may complete an absentee ballot application, in person in our office, on behalf of the voter who wishes to vote absentee. Once your application is received, our office typically mails your ballot within 1–2 days. The time it takes for you to receive your ballot depends on the postal service. Please complete and return your ballot by 7:00 PM on Election Day to ensure it is counted.

Requests Absentee Ballots on Behalf of a Relative

The following relatives may complete an absentee ballot application on behalf of the voter who wishes to vote absentee:

  • Brother
  • Child
  • Daughter-in-law
  • Father-in-law
  • Grandchild
  • Grandparent
  • Mother-in-law
  • Parent
  • Sister
  • Son-in-law
  • Spouse

No family member can leave the elections office with a ballot. We are required by law to mail the ballot to the voter.

if you received an absentee ballot, do not take it to the poll on Election Day!

Requirements & Restrictions

  • Absentee ballot applications must be received by the 2nd Wednesday prior to any election in order to receive a ballot by mail.
  • An application can be as simple as a note written on a plain sheet of paper that includes the name(s) of the person(s) requesting the absentee ballot(s), the address of the voter(s), the address where the ballot(s) are to be mailed, the reason for voting absentee, the party ballot choice, and most importantly the signature(s) of the person(s) requesting the absentee ballot(s).
  • Applications for an absentee ballot should never be sent anywhere except to the County Clerk’s office. Please do not send the request to city hall or the library.
